This unique program has brought together tens of thousands of needy children and loving retired adults who have all been deeply enriched by new relationships. We train and place senior volunteers in schools, non-profit childcare centers and other youth service organizations to help set children on the path to a successful future. This Federal program pays a tax-free stipend to income-eligible volunteers who are over the age of 55.

Our Foster Grandparent volunteers serve a minimum of 10 hours a week at their school, child care or after school program. Foster Grandparent volunteers attend monthly workshops where topics relating to either child development or senior health are presented, such as educational support methods, early literacy, social issues that impact families and children, managing stress, and community supports. Every 6-8 weeks Program Coordinators visit the Foster Grandparent while they are volunteering to provide support, over-sight and answer any questions the volunteer or teacher might have.

Foster Grandparent serve regular, consistent hours at the same site, so they become highly valued members of the school team. Because of their consistency, Foster Grandparent are able to have a remarkable impact on the children and young adults they serve resulting in considerable gains towards academic growth and emotional development. Foster Grandparents gain significant health benefits by staying active both physically and mentally.

The Friends Foster Grandparent Program is built to serve the needs of schools, children, and the volunteers. Participants choose the age of children they enjoy most and the times they prefer to volunteer.

In addition to the tax-free stipend, volunteers receive mileage reimbursements for their travel to and from their volunteer site, meal reimbursements, paid time off, and annual recognition events.

"Our Foster Grandparent is a wonderful addition to our classroom. She builds strong connections with the students and they enjoy spending time with her. A previous student from two years ago is moving to Kansas, and she brought "Grammy" a goodbye card with the words "I will never forget you ever" on it. This shows how she has a lasting impact on these students."

Mentor One Child…Enrich Two Lives

Founded in 1975, the Friends Youth Mentoring Program provides boys and girls, ages 6-17, from Merrimack County with a mentor who serves as a positive role model and a supportive advocate. At the core of this healthy 1:1 relationship is the bond that is established. One parent, with three children in the program stated, “I’ve learned to ask for help, to trust in other people to share my children’s lives, and to appreciate kindness.”

Mentors, just by being themselves, provide a wider window to the world and help children gain perspective; access to opportunities and new learning beyond their immediate neighborhoods. They are a dedicated group of individuals who care deeply about children and their communities. Their abilities and life experiences are great assets to a young person seeking an important, healthy, positive connection. Mentors encourage and celebrate successful outcomes. While naturally engaged in fun and/or interesting activities they impart encouraging words and applaud important esteem-building that serves children well during the 1:1 time and well-beyond.
